2014

JUNE
The Hoosier Fly Fishers does not officially meet over the summer.  Our constitution mandates this schedule.  The reason for this pause in official business is the fact that we need to be fishing during the
summer, not attending meetings.   So it is just that simple, simply go fishing. However, if you miss our merry band of fly fishers, we will meet unofficially on Tuesdays over the summer at the Colorado Steakhouse.   Unofficial meetings will be June 17, July 15, August 19, and September 16th,  6PM.   Hope to see you all there.   Tall tales and useful tips are in order.   The first officially official meeting of the fall will be October 21st.

MAY
The annual HFF picnic will be May 31st.  Once again Barry Clarke has offered his Lake Lemon home for the venue.  Thank you Barry.  The club will provide burgers, brats and buns.  Please bring some tasty side dish to round out the groaning board.  I have heard some murmurings about the need (rather desire I think) for additions to the table that would upset both your dentist and cardiologist.  Let ’em eat cake.  As always this will be a chance to chat with friends and perhaps even catch a fish or two.  The fun will start at 11:00 with food at 1:00.

John Gierach has a new book, “All Fishermen Are Liars.” This will
certainly be some good summer reading!
Hope to see you all at the picnic,

APRIL
The April 15th meeting will feature Ian Anderson of Warm Water
Chronicles (http://warmwaterchronicles.com) and FlyMasters in Indy (http://www.flymasters.com) as the program. He will tell us all about spring White Bass fishing. Ian also teaches beginning and intermediate fly tying at FlyMasters and is a font of information about warm water flyfishing. If you haven’t already, check out the WWC site for Ian’s weekly tying tips. Good stuff there.

MARCH
Enough winter!  Enough,  enough !!!  History seems to indicate that spring will come someday.  For me, someday is not soon enough,  I have a nearly terminal case of cabin fever.  However, there is a bright spot in the near future.  That bright spot is the annual HFF auction!   The March meeting will be on the 18th at the Colorado Steakhouse.   Dinner at 6:00 and the auction at 7:00.

In the past the funds raised at the auction were used to by books for
the club library.  When we figured out that only a few of the members could actually read, we now dedicate the auction funds to a speaker account.  The benefits of this will happen soon.

I have been in touch with Kurnel Kevin,  our highly skilled auctioneer, he is in rigorous training for the big event.  Kevin is very skilled at getting us to part with all that extra money we have been hoarding.  Your job is to bring some really neat stuff you no longer need.  Kevin needs stuff to sell.   This is not a one-way street.  Others will have brought neat stuff that you do actually need.  The more stuff,  the more fun!

And if the excitement of the auction were not enough, our own Larry
Brown will tie a streamer pattern he uses with great effect. He uses of that foil from wine and whiskey bottles for the weight. We should thank Larry for emptying all those bottles just to get some tying material. That is real dedication.

So on March 18th we will meet at the Colorado Steakhouse for the fun fill evening of the annual auction.  Dinner at 6:00 and the auction will start at 7:00.  Bring really good stuff and have a ball.

FEBRUARY
We have made arrangements with JLWaters to use some of their space as a location to get together and tie flies, share ideas, and I suppose, bitch about the weather and brag about our fishing prowess. We will have the space downstairs where the ski shop used to be, it is a nice space and a new wall offers some privacy. Bring your own stuff and tools. This is also a good opportunity to buy some stuff from JLWaters. I think it would be a good idea to bring an extra light. The first meeting will be Saturday February 8th at 1:00 PM. I am thinking of tying some simple yet very effective deer hair bugs. This is not a class or demo, just a chance to share. Check the HFF Calendar for upcoming Saturday Events.

The February meeting will be on the 18th. The program this month will be all about fly tying, four of our members, excellent tiers each and everyone will show us some tricks and answer questions. So come and watch Mike Donovan, Barry Clarke, Dick Powell and Paul Brown at work. These guys are so good the fish will chew through the ice, crawl across College Ave just to see what’s up and perhaps have a bite to eat. I’m just sayin’. So, come join us on the 18th at the Colorado Steakhouse. Dinner at 6:00 and the program begins at 7:00.

JANUARY
HFF meeting on January 21st. The program will be all about fly rods, building them, selecting components, picking a good one off the rack and anything else you may want to know. Barry Clarke will make the presentation. And if that isn’t enough, Mike Donovan will tie a woven body nymph. The meeting will be at the Colorado Steakhouse, dinner at 6:00 PM and the program at 7:00 PM.
