April Fly Tying

We had a good turnout for the April HFF Meeting.  For those that were expecting to see Ian Anderson we apologize.   He will reschedule and join us later in the year.

Most everyone came to the meeting for the great food and service at the Colorado Steakhouse and the fellowship and fly fishing tales.   However, the highlight of the evening was the fly tying demonstrations done by club members Dick Powell and Mike Donovan.

Our newest members, Rowan and David joined in on the fly tying and the older members were eager to help them.  It was an enjoyable  meeting and almost everyone went home with new flies and hopes of great success using them.

The next HFF Club meeting will be at the annual club picnic on the 31st of May.   More information will be posted soon.

Fishing Report:  Spring is here and along with it comes rain and high waters in some of Indiana’s rivers and reservoirs.  Most rivers have high flow rates from the reservoirs release rates but most small ponds and pits are looking good.  Most small streams are clear and wadable now and fish are on the move with water temperatures ranging from the low 40’s in tailwaters to almost 60 degrees in small ponds.  Fish are hungry and eager to bite this time of year.  One Pound Bluegills, crappies, and bass are active in the small ponds and pits.  Reports have come in of a few smallmouth being caught in creeks and some walleye, white bass,  crappies, and wipers moving in the rivers and below dams.  Check the stream flow rates on this website in the sidebars and forums.  Get out and give it a try, let us know how you do!

January HFF Meeting

The January meeting of the Hoosier Flyfishers will be on the 21st at
the Colorado Steakhouse, Dinner at 6:00, Program at 7:00.  The program will be all about fly rods.   Barry Clarke will tell us how to build them, selecting components, picking a good one off the rack.  I sometimes wonder what piece of equipment is most important, the rod, the reel, the line, the leader, the tippet or the fly.   Maybe it is the balance between all of these things. I know some fisherpersons will choose the smallest rod and lightest tippet…for the “fight” you know.   Personally, I go for the largest effective tippet.   I think it gives catch and release a better change of success. I mean, don’t play the fish to death!

Rod, reel, line, leader and tippet… there is one more piece in this picture, the Fly.   To cover that last bit of a successful rig is the fly and Mike Donovan will tie a woven body nymph pattern.  I have seen one of these flies Mike tied and I am impressed.   Don’t miss this program.

How are we all coming on the New Year’s resolutions?   I still have 346 days left to get my 100 days of fishing in 2014.   Things are still
looking good.

Warm Water Chronicles

I have been enjoying the Warm Water Chronicles web site.   Among other things of interest is the fly tying tips Ian Anderson posts every Monday. That is 52 tying tips this year!  http://warmwaterchronicles.com

It won’t be long before there will be some 2014 fish in the gallery.
Hope to see you all Tuesday at the Colorado Steakhouse.
